Synoptic Gospels Chart
The first three Gospels--Matthew, Mark and Luke--are known collectively as the Synoptic Gospels. Even a passing comparison of these Gospels shows that they share in common much of their content. The obvious deduction is that they were based on the same source or sources. The most common theory advocated is that Mark was written first and Matthew and Luke were written later using Mark as a base text. The following chart shows what percentage of material is common to the Gospels. Purple represents the material that is common to all three Gospels. It is particularly remarkable how little material is unique to Mark.
